King size bed means king size bedding if you choose a stand style frame.  They also usually require two twin size box frames for support.  This can add up to a lot of cash.  There are alternatives to box springs and bed skirts.

King size beds that are made in a platform style eliminate the need for box springs.  A platform style bed frame uses a sold piece  under the mattress rather than the bed slats used by conventional frames.  Since the platform is solid, there is no need for a box spring.  There is no need for a bed skirt with many styles of platform beds since the sides of the bed are meant to be displayed and there is no box spring to hide.

Some king size platform beds have storage space in the form of drawers.  These large drawers are built into the bed frame and slide out to provide lots of storage with out taking up any additional floor space.  This type of bed can eliminate the need for dressers or chests of drawers by provide the same storage.  The storage style platform bed is perfect for rooms which don’t have the space for lots of furniture.  They’ll give your room a pared down, modern, uncluttered appearance.

Floating platform beds are available in a king size bed.  In these beds the base that supports the platform is recessed so the platform appears to be suspended in mid air.  Many of the beds in this style have a platform that is slightly larger than the mattress.  Again, there is no need for a bed skirt.  Typically the bedding, including the comforter or spread, is tucked under the mattress giving this type of bed a very clean, streamlined look.

You can find actual floating king size beds.  Some are round and some are standard.  These have platforms which are either built into the wall or suspended from the ceiling.  They have to be installed by a qualified carpenter, or your floating bed could become a crashing bed.  The round king size beds are 8ft in diameter and are suspended from a single point in the ceiling.  The standard king size floating beds generally have four cables or chains which fasten into the ceiling joists.  The floating beds that are built into the wall are usually custom beds and work on the same principle as cantilevers.
